Osteoarthritis is no longer thought to simply be a result of wear and tear. More recently, researchers have discovered that subchondral (or bone just beneath the cartilage) becomes thicker prior the development of osteoarthritis. This process is believed to initiate changes in the cartilage, and is associated with active inflammation.
Unfortunately, all of the medications standardly used for pain relief have side effects. In particular, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) used for osteoarthritis inhibit cartilage repair, obviously detrimental to an osteoarthritis sufferer. Even long term paracetamol use at normal dosages can lead to liver damage. In addition, pain medication does not address the underlying causes of osteoarthritis.
At Viva Naturopathic we can recommend ways to halt the progression of osteoarthritis and reverse existing damage. Although fish oil may be helpful for some people, there are far more potent natural remedies available. Herbal anti-inflammatories are safe and effective and do not have a damaging effect on the gastrointestinal tract. In particular, research supports the use of Boswellia and Turmeric. However, not all Turmeric preparations are bioavailable; at Viva Naturopathic we only recommend the most effective and well researched forms. We also use remedies to protect and rebuild bone and cartilage.
